- The thought process that led to the creation of ‘The Pride of a City’
When asked if I would be willing to donate a painting to commemorate the 60th anniversary of St.Johns Drum & Bugle Corps, I was pleased to accept and quickly realized the challenge such a composition would represent.
The goals I set out were to acknowledge the long history of the organization and celebrate its numerous accomplishments. The result is an 18” x 24” oil painting entitled The Pride of a City.
Communicating the history was done through showing different sections of the corps performing during different eras while wearing many of the uniforms the group has had since 1953. Unfortunately, when creating such a compilation, it is virtually impossible not to exclude some eras that were meaningful to the organization and dear to some alumni members. I work from photographic reference and the selection of available images made to me more or less dictates what will be featured in the composition. That and making sure the end result is not overly busy.
The corps’ accomplishments were summarized by showing in the upper left corner, the drum major proudly displaying the National Championship trophy back in 1953 and, in the upper right corner, a member of the 1972 corps hugging the coveted U.S. Open Championship trophy. The newspaper headline between the two scenes serves as a link between the corps’ many accomplishments and the pride it brought to the city of Brantford.
Perhaps the most important part of the painting for me is the group of fifteen girls in the center posing in practice clothes around a flag bearing the corps emblem during a break at rehearsal. Their arms around each other, their smiling faces and the obvious closeness that exists between them captures the essence of the unforgettable experience of having been involved in such a wonderful activity. It truly represents the camaraderie and the dedication that resulted in so many life-long friendships.
